You return to a parked car after unloading groceries. The backup camera shows an empty space behind it. What should you do before reversing?

  • Check the area around the vehicle for people and obstacles, then use direct observation and the available mirrors as you begin backing. (correct): Correct. Check around the vehicle before backing and keep observing while you move.
  • Rely on the camera because it displays the area most directly behind the vehicle.: A camera can help, but it does not replace checking around the vehicle or using mirrors and direct observation.
  • Begin moving and check the surroundings only if a warning sounds.: A warning device may not detect every person or obstacle. Check before moving instead of waiting for an alert.

A camera is only one view. A fresh check of the area before backing can reveal people or obstacles that a display or sensor does not show.

A child is standing beside the sidewalk while you prepare to back from a driveway. The child walks behind a tall parked van and is no longer visible. What is the safest next step?

  • Wait until the child is visible in a safe place away from the vehicle and the path is clear before moving. (correct): Correct. Wait until the child is visible away from the vehicle and you can confirm the path is clear.
  • Back very slowly because the child was visible a moment ago.: The child's earlier position does not establish where they are now. Slow speed does not make it safe to move without knowing where the child is.
  • Watch the backup-camera screen and proceed if it shows no movement.: A camera view may not include the child’s location. It cannot establish that the entire path is clear.

A child can move unpredictably and may be hidden by the vehicle or another object. Do not start backing while the child is out of sight near the path.

Your car has a backup camera and its screen looks clear. You have not checked the mirrors or looked behind you. Which approach is safest before and during the reverse?

  • Use the camera as an added view, while checking mirrors and looking behind as you back slowly. (correct): Correct. Treat the display as an additional view and continue checking around you with mirrors and direct observation.
  • Use the camera alone because it covers every place a person could be behind the car.: A camera does not show every possible hazard and does not replace mirrors or looking behind.
  • Ignore the camera and use only the inside rearview mirror.: The camera can provide useful additional information. The safer approach combines it with other observations rather than discarding it or relying on one view.

The camera can show an image of the area directly behind the vehicle, but it is not a complete substitute for mirrors or turning to look. Continue observing as you back.

You have begun backing slowly from a parking space. A person carrying a bag steps behind your car from between two parked vehicles. What should you do?

  • Stop and let the person clear the path, then recheck the area before continuing only when it is safe. (correct): Correct. Stop for the person, wait until the path is clear, and check again before resuming.
  • Continue at the same slow pace because you checked behind the car before starting.: A pre-movement check cannot guarantee the path stays clear. Keep checking and respond to a new hazard.
  • Turn toward the camera screen and steer around the person without stopping.: Steering around a person while still moving creates a new hazard and does not ensure the path is clear.

The area can change after you start moving. Stop when a person enters your path, then reassess before moving again.

During a walk-around before leaving a driveway, you see a small child’s scooter behind the car. What should you do before reversing?

  • Keep the car stopped, remove or have someone safely remove the scooter, and confirm the area is clear before backing. (correct): Correct. Clear the obstacle without creating a new hazard, then make sure the area remains clear before moving.
  • Back slowly over the scooter because the camera shows where it is.: The camera helps show an image, but it is not a reason to move over an object or assume there are no other hazards.
  • Sound the horn and begin reversing if no one responds.: A horn does not confirm that the area is clear. Check and clear the path before moving.

An object in the path is a reason to keep the vehicle stopped until it is safely cleared and you have checked the surrounding area.

# Backing safely: a short study guide **For California adult Class C learners.** This is original unofficial learning material. It is not a California DMV test or a statement of California law. Before reversing, survey the area around the vehicle for people and obstacles. Pay particular attention to small children, who may be hard to see. If a child nearby is no longer visible or safely accounted for, wait before moving. Use a backup camera as an extra view. Combine it with mirrors and looking behind you; camera and warning systems may not show every hazard. Back slowly and keep checking because someone or something can enter the path after you begin. Stop and reassess when a person or obstacle appears. If you find an object in the path, keep the vehicle stopped until it can be safely cleared and you have checked the area again. These are safety recommendations drawn from the official sources listed in `citations.json`; the guide does not establish a California statute, required procedure, exact distance, or vehicle-specific camera coverage. *Supplemental safety guidance; not an official DMV test, statement of California law, or vehicle-specific operating guide.*
